For decades, the fitness industry has approached training with a one-size-fits-all mindset. Most traditional training methods, exercise science research, and coaching philosophies were developed using male participants, with the findings often applied to women without much question.
Thankfully, that conversation is beginning to change.
Recently, I attended an event that explored female physiology in sport and exercise. It wasn't about creating completely different rules for women, nor was it suggesting women should avoid hard training or spend half the month resting. Instead, it focused on something much more important: understanding how female physiology influences training, recovery and performance so that women can train with their bodies rather than constantly feeling like they're working against them.
As someone who is passionate about health, fitness and education, it reinforced something I've been thinking about for a long time. Women's health is finally becoming part of mainstream fitness conversations, but there's still a huge amount of misinformation. Scroll through social media and you'll find everything from "never train during your period" to "you need a completely different workout every week of your cycle." On the other hand, you'll also hear people dismiss the topic entirely, arguing that men and women should train exactly the same because "muscles are muscles."
The truth, as it so often is, sits somewhere in the middle.
Training with female physiology in mind doesn't mean women need easier workouts or completely different exercises. It means recognising that women experience training stress differently, recover differently, and have physiological considerations that deserve to be acknowledged - not ignored.
Understanding these differences doesn't limit performance. If anything, it empowers women to get more from their training, make informed decisions, and build a healthier relationship with exercise.
Why Has Exercise Science Focused on Men?
To understand why conversations around female physiology feel relatively new, we first need to understand where exercise science came from.
Historically, the vast majority of sports science research has been conducted using male participants. Researchers often excluded women because hormonal fluctuations throughout the menstrual cycle introduced additional variables that made studies more complicated to design and interpret. There were also concerns around pregnancy and ethical considerations that meant women were frequently left out altogether.
While these decisions were largely made for practical reasons, they created an unintended consequence.
Much of what we know about resistance training, sports nutrition, recovery, and exercise programming has been built on research involving male bodies. This doesn't mean the science is wrong. Progressive overload still builds muscle. Strength training improves health. Cardiovascular exercise benefits everyone. However, it does mean we've spent decades assuming that if something works well in men, it must automatically be the optimal approach for women too.
Thankfully, researchers are now beginning to close that gap. More studies are specifically investigating female physiology, menstrual health, pregnancy, postpartum exercise and menopause, giving coaches and fitness professionals a much clearer understanding of how women respond to training. What's particularly exciting is that this research isn't showing women are "weaker" or somehow less capable. In fact, many physiological differences can be viewed as strengths. The aim isn't to separate men and women into completely different training worlds. It's to recognise that understanding female physiology allows for better coaching, better communication and ultimately better outcomes.

Women Aren't Small Men
One of the biggest misconceptions in fitness is that acknowledging physiological differences somehow implies women are less capable. In reality, recognising these differences simply allows a coach to teach more effectively. Men and women both respond to progressive overload. Both can build muscle, become stronger and improve cardiovascular fitness.
However, how the body responds to training stress can differ. Research suggests women often recover more quickly between sets during resistance training and may experience less muscle damage following similar relative workloads. Women also tend to rely more heavily on fat as a fuel source during endurance exercise, while men generally depend more on carbohydrates. Women often demonstrate greater fatigue resistance during submaximal exercise, meaning they can sometimes tolerate higher training volumes or repeated efforts surprisingly well.
Hormones also influence training responses. Oestrogen appears to have protective effects on muscle tissue and connective tissue, while progesterone can influence body temperature, breathing and perceived effort. These aren't disadvantages. They're simply different physiological characteristics that can influence how someone experiences training. The best coaches don't ignore these differences. They consider them alongside sleep, nutrition, stress, age, training history and individual preferences. Because good coaching has never been about creating one perfect programme for everyone. It's about understanding the individual standing in front of you.
The Menstrual Cycle Isn't the Enemy
Few topics have generated as much discussion online as training around the menstrual cycle. Some influencers suggest women should avoid lifting heavy during their period. Others recommend changing your entire training programme every week. Some even imply that hormones determine whether you'll have a good workout at all.
The reality is far less dramatic.
The menstrual cycle consists of four phases: menstruation, the follicular phase, ovulation and the luteal phase. Throughout these phases, hormones naturally fluctuate. For some women, these hormonal changes are barely noticeable. Others experience changes in mood, energy, sleep quality, body temperature, motivation or physical symptoms such as cramping and bloating. This individual variation is one of the most important things to understand. Current evidence suggests that while some women may notice changes in performance across their cycle, there isn't one universal pattern that applies to everyone. This is where social media often oversimplifies the science. Instead of following rigid cycle-syncing schedules, women are likely to benefit far more from becoming curious about their own experiences.
Do you consistently feel stronger during certain weeks?
Do you recover more slowly at other times?
Are there days where prioritising mobility or reducing training volume feels beneficial?
These observations are valuable, not because they replace evidence-based programming, but because they help create an approach that's personalised. Understanding your menstrual cycle shouldn't become another source of pressure. It should simply become another tool in your coaching toolbox.

Common Myths That Need to Disappear
One of the biggest barriers to women's progress isn't physiology - it's misinformation.
For years, women have been told they should avoid lifting heavy because they'll become bulky. Despite overwhelming evidence showing the benefits of strength training, this myth still refuses to disappear. Building significant muscle mass requires years of consistent training, appropriate nutrition and, in many cases, favourable genetics. For most women, lifting weights leads to increased strength, improved body composition, greater confidence and better long-term health - not an overnight transformation into a bodybuilder.
Another common myth is that cardio is the best way to lose fat. While cardiovascular exercise absolutely has its place, resistance training helps preserve lean muscle mass during weight loss, supports metabolic health and contributes to long-term body composition changes. The most effective fat-loss approach usually combines sensible nutrition, strength training, regular movement and adequate recovery rather than endless hours on the treadmill.
Then there's the idea that women should dramatically reduce training every luteal phase or avoid exercise altogether during menstruation. While some women genuinely feel better adjusting their training around certain symptoms, others continue to perform exceptionally well throughout their cycle. There is no universal rule. Flexibility is far more valuable than rigid programming.
Perhaps the most harmful myth is that hormones are the reason women can't make progress. Hormones certainly influence how we feel, recover and perform, but they're only one piece of a much larger puzzle that includes sleep, nutrition, stress management, consistency and progressive overload.
What Training With Female Physiology Actually Looks Like
Training with female physiology in mind doesn't require an entirely different exercise library.
Squats are still squats.
Deadlifts are still deadlifts.
Progressive overload still matters.
What changes is the way you think about programming and recovery.
Rather than forcing ourselves to hit personal bests every session, we become more aware of how different factors influence performance. We prioritise good sleep, adequate nutrition and sufficient recovery. We understand that stress outside the gym affects adaptation inside the gym. We recognise that some weeks may feel easier than others, and that's perfectly normal.
One of the most important considerations is fuelling training appropriately. Far too many active women unintentionally under-eat, particularly carbohydrates, while simultaneously increasing training volume. Over time, this can contribute to low energy availability, reduced recovery, menstrual dysfunction and increased injury risk. Food isn't something to be earned. It's fuel. And if we're asking our bodies to perform, we need to give them the resources to do so.
Training with female physiology in mind also means embracing strength training throughout life - not just for aesthetics, but for bone health, muscle preservation, confidence and healthy ageing.

Looking Beyond Performance
Strength training isn't only about building muscle or improving your squat. It's about building resilience.
Women naturally experience changes in hormone levels throughout life, particularly during menopause, where declining oestrogen can contribute to reductions in bone density and muscle mass. Resistance training is one of the most effective tools we have to help protect against these changes.
Exercise also supports mental wellbeing, confidence and independence later in life. The conversation around female physiology shouldn't be limited to elite athletes. It matters just as much for the woman who wants to keep up with her children, feel stronger carrying shopping bags, reduce her risk of osteoporosis or simply enjoy movement without fear.
Final Thoughts
For too long, women have been expected to fit into training systems that weren't designed with them in mind. Thankfully, that's changing.
Understanding female physiology doesn't mean women need completely different exercises or dramatically different programmes. It means recognising that context matters. Hormones matter. Recovery matters. Nutrition matters. Individual experiences matter. The future of fitness shouldn't be about telling women they have to train differently every week, nor should it be about pretending physiological differences don't exist.
Instead, it should be about empowering women with evidence, encouraging curiosity about their own bodies, and creating training programmes that are adaptable, sustainable and rooted in science rather than trends. Women don't need less challenging training. They deserve better-informed coaching.
Because when we stop asking women to fit into systems built for someone else, we create space for them to thrive on their own terms.
