If you’re reading this because you’re thinking about using your ELCAS funding and exploring a future in the fitness industry, then I’m really glad you’ve landed here. I always like to imagine that by the time you finish reading, it feels like we’ve already had a proper conversation about where you’re at and what might come next for you.
I’m Elise, Study Actives Lead Career Advisor. I speak every day with serving members of the Armed Forces and service leavers who are trying to make sense of their next step. Some already have a clear direction, and others are just starting to explore what’s possible. Either way, the conversations are always the same at the core - people want something flexible, worthwhile, and that genuinely fits around real life.
That’s exactly why I wanted to write this. Everything you’ll read here comes directly from those conversations - the questions people ask me, the concerns they have about timing and funding, and the excitement they feel when they realise what’s possible through ELCAS.
My goal is to keep things as simple and straightforward as possible, and to help you understand how ELCAS works, what your options are, and whether this path could be right for you.
And if it feels like it’s the right fit, then hopefully this is just the beginning of the conversation.

Helping You Understand Your ELCAS Options
Having spoken with many members of the Armed Forces who are planning their next career move, I understand just how important flexibility is when it comes to choosing a course. Military life can be unpredictable, with deployments, training commitments, exercises, and family responsibilities all needing to be balanced alongside study.
Because of this, finding a learning provider that can genuinely adapt around your schedule is essential. It’s not just about studying - it’s about making sure your learning fits into real life, wherever service takes you.
At Study Active, we’ve built our approach around that need for learning that moves with you. Our aim is simple: to make sure your learning fits around your existing duties, not the other way around.
ELCAS funding can also make a significant difference. It can contribute up to 80% of your course fees, helping to significantly reduce the financial pressure of retraining. For many service personnel, this makes the transition into a new career far more accessible, allowing you to focus on your development rather than the cost of training.
We are also a Proud Armed Forces Covenant Signatory, meaning we have made a formal commitment to support the Armed Forces community. In practical terms, this reflects our promise to recognise the value of serving personnel, veterans, and their families, and to ensure they are treated fairly and supported when accessing education and career opportunities. It’s about respect, understanding, and actively removing barriers wherever possible.

Could fitness be a natural continuation of your military journey?
One of the biggest advantages of transitioning into the fitness industry is how naturally military experience aligns with it. Many of the skills developed during service are directly transferable and highly valued in the health and fitness sector.
These include:
-
Strong leadership and the ability to motivate others under pressure
-
Clear communication skills developed through teamwork and instruction
-
Discipline, consistency, and self-management in challenging environments
-
Coaching, mentoring, and supporting others to achieve goals
-
A strong understanding of physical training, fitness, and performance
Because of this, former military personnel are often highly sought after within gyms, health clubs, sports organisations, rehabilitation settings, and the wider health and wellbeing industry.
Whether your goal is to become a Personal Trainer, Gym Instructor, Sports Massage Therapist, or specialist coach, gaining a recognised qualification is usually the first and most important step. It provides the foundation to turn your experience into a long-term, rewarding career.
Education Built for the Demands of Armed Forces Life
We understand that flexibility is not a benefit - it’s a necessity.
Our ELCAS-approved courses are specifically designed to fit around the demands of military life, including operational duties, family commitments, resettlement activities, and unpredictable schedules. We know that no two learners are the same, which is why our approach is built around adaptability.
Learners can complete the majority of their studies online, supported throughout by experienced tutors who guide them at every stage of their qualification. This ensures you are never left to navigate the learning journey alone, even when balancing other commitments.
In addition, practical assessment options are available either face-to-face or remotely. This ensures you can continue progressing no matter where you are based, whether at home, on base, or deployed elsewhere. The focus is always on keeping your qualification moving forward in a way that works for your circumstances.
Our team has supported many Armed Forces learners through the ELCAS process and can provide clear guidance at every stage. From understanding your funding entitlement to helping you select the right course and completing your application, we are here to make the process as smooth as possible.

How ELCAS Funding Works with Study Active
We understand that the funding process can sometimes feel a little unclear, especially if it’s your first time using ELCAS. To make things as simple as possible, we’ve broken the process down into clear, manageable steps so you know exactly what to expect.
1. Check your ELCAS eligibility and entitlement
The first step is confirming that you’re eligible for ELCAS funding and understanding how much funding you have available. Most service personnel can access up to 80% funding towards approved training courses. If you’re unsure, our team can help point you in the right direction.
2. Choose your Study Active course
Once you know your entitlement, you can select the course that best suits your career goals. Whether you’re looking to become a Personal Trainer, Gym Instructor, or progress into specialist areas of fitness, we can help guide you toward the right qualification for your next step.
3. Submit your ELCAS application (we can help guide you)
You’ll then complete your ELCAS application through the official system. This is where your chosen course and provider details are submitted for approval. If you need support at this stage, our team is on hand to guide you through the process and ensure everything is completed correctly.
4. Receive approval and funding confirmation
Once approved, you will receive confirmation of your funding allocation with a Claim Authorisation Note (CAN). This means your place on the course can be secured and your learning journey can begin with financial support already in place.
5. Start your course with full tutor support
After approval, you’ll send Study Active a copy of your Claim Authorisation Note and pay your personal contribution and begin your qualification with full access to our online learning platform and dedicated tutor support. From day one, you’ll be supported throughout your studies, with the flexibility to learn at your own pace and around your military commitments.
This simple process is designed to remove uncertainty and make it as straightforward as possible to get started. For many learners, having a clear pathway like this is what makes the decision to begin much easier.
Building your future.
Your military experience has already given you a strong foundation of skills that many industries value highly. Discipline, leadership, resilience, and the ability to perform under pressure are all qualities that translate exceptionally well into the fitness sector.
With ELCAS funding supporting up to 80% of course fees, the financial barrier to retraining is significantly reduced. Combined with Study Active’s flexible, learner-focused approach, there has never been a better opportunity to take control of your future and build a career that keeps you active, motivated, and helping others achieve their goals.
