2026 UPDATE - What are the Highest Paying Jobs in the UK Without a Degree in 2026? - Here are my Findings
Being a recent university graduate, the UK labour market is at the forefront of my mind and a very important topic to stay clued up about. Therefore, this article was more than relevant to me and was certainly worth a read! This article correctly highlighted a major shift in the UK labour market, long story short employers like practical skills, certifications and experience rather than just university degrees. However, this blog was written way back in October 2024. Therefore, I hear you asking: has this changed? By how much? Is this information still the case? Lucky you for you I have done my research for a 2026 update!
A big change I found since 2024 was a rapid growth of skill-based hiring, which is basically choosing candidates based on demonstrated abilities and skills over qualifications. For example, AI has rapidly improved over the last few years and the demand for AI-competent employees has increased with it, alongside the threat of AI taking jobs – so now is the time to get AI savvy!

Many careers that are mentioned in the article do remain among the highest-paying jobs without a degree – so not drastic change there before we get to ahead of ourselves! Skilled trades like electricians, train drivers and welders are still performing well due to labour shortages and infrastructure investments, seeing strong salary growth across the UK! Congratulations if you are working in any of these sectors!

Careers in technology have evolved the fastest, probably not a shock, right? When the article was written, web development and digital marketing were seen as accessible entry routes. Come 2026, and the rapid development of AI, employers have caught on to the benefits of AI and therefore prioritise using it. As a result, with skill-based hiring and AI becoming more used, entry-level positions have become more competitive as AI can automate administrative and junior roles. UK employers have reported declines in vacancies for some graduate and junior roles recently. However, as a graduate I would definitely say do not let this put you off getting a degree!
However, AI isn’t all doom and gloom! In order to stand out in the ever-increasingly competitive job market, skills, certifications or experience are great to have! Employers are increasingly favouring those who can work alongside AI rather than against them, embracing and adapting to the changes in technology can be vital to finding a job!
Now, it wouldn’t be a Study Active blog without mention of fitness and wellness, would it? This sector has also maintained strong growth and personal trainers now have more opportunities than ever through online coaching, fitness apps and social media. The industry has shifted from just gym-based employment to flexible, hybrid business.
So then, to summarise this article is still very relevant in 2026! The main difference though is how the UK job market is becoming ever-more focused on adaptable, skilled workers. While degrees are certainly still important in certain professions, practical skills, industry experience and AI literacy are becoming more and more valuable for building a high-paying career, which gets a big thumbs up from me!
